Howard BaconHoward W. Bacon, Jr., 80 of Grand Island died Thursday, January 18, 2007, at home following a brief illness.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Mr. Bacon was born February 8, 1926 at Grand Island the son of Howard W., Sr. and Kathryn (Noaecker) Bacon. Survivors are his wife Lorraine, daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Michael Mueller, Judy and Dennis Tjaden and a son David Bacon all of Grand Island and a sister Betty Olson of Omaha. Those also special to him are grandchildren, Michele Schomer, Tracy Stahlnecker, Heather Burry, Wendi Hughes, Tom Tjaden, Josh Bacon and Michael Mueller, Jr. and great grandchildren, Katilyn Schomer, Jase Stahlnecker, Zachary Stahlnecker, Tyler Martinez, Jonathan Schomer, Johnny Martinez, Jillianne Burry and step great grandchildren, Jonathon Burry, M.J. Lemburg, Jordan Lemburg, and Alexis Lemburg and two soon to be great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His parents and an infant daughter Marcia Bacon preceded him in death. Howard was raised and received his education in Grand Island graduating from Grand Island Senior High. He served in the United States Navy from December 1943 and honorably discharged May 1946 as a 2 nd Class Petty Officer Machinist Mate. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Stroh on March 24, 1946. They lived all their married life in Grand Island. He worked at Roush Motor’s, the mill at Sothman Lumber Company until joining the Grand Island Police Department on December 1, 1957 as a police officer. He was promoted to Police Captain on June 1, 1966 and worked as shift captain. In September of 1972 he was transferred from the Patrol Division to the Criminal Investigation Division as Captain in charge. On August 13, 1979 he was promoted to Chief of Police. He received recognition for rescuing a life in 1962. He retired from the police department in 1987. He served on the City Council in April 1956 – April 1957. He was a member of United Congregational Church, serving on many church boards, including chairman of the memorial committee, the American Legion 40 & 8, and the Platt-Duetsche. Memorials are suggested the Church, Boys Ranch at Alliance or Research and Treatment for Ovarian Cancer. |
