Donald W. Fischer

Donald W. Fischer, 76, of Grand Island died on Tuesday, July 24th in Boise, Idaho.  He died from complications of hemochromatosis, a hereditary condition he was only diagnosed with 4 years ago.  He was surrounded by his wife and children at the time of his peaceful death.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31st at Grace Lutheran Church, 545 E. Memorial Drive.  The Reverend Dan Bremer will officiate.  Burial will be at the Phillips Cemetery with full Air Force Military Honors.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Don was born on January 6, 1931 to William and Ella (Mettenbrink) Fischer.  He was raised on the family farm near Phillips, graduating from high school in 1948.  After serving in the Air Force he returned to Nebraska, graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1958.  He married Marilyn Otto on August 11, 1954 together they had 3 children, Brett, Blake and Barbra.  Don and Marilyn originally made their home in Lincoln and later York, moving to Grand Island in 1965.  Don worked in sales, he enjoyed his work, traveling and developing many friendships over the years.  Don’s life centered around his wife and family.  Don was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for over 40 years, serving in many positions.

Don will be greatly missed by Marilyn his wife of 53 years, sons and daughter-in-law, Brett and Sue Fischer, Blake Fischer, and daughter and son-in-law, Barbra and Darin Osterhout.  He is survived by his special grandchildren Jake and Mitchell of Arizona, Travis, Jess J. and Jessica M. of Colorado, and Gabe, Meg and Luke of Idaho.  He is survived by his brothers Bill of Omaha and Jerry of Durango, CO, and many special nieces and nephews.  He was preceded into death by his parents.

Don enjoyed his family, children and later his grandchildren.  He always had pictures of his family to share with others.  Time with his family was very special, and since his diagnosis in 2003 our time with Don became even more special.  These latter years we filled with many many happy memories and we were so blessed to have Don for as long as we did.  Don’s goal was to have his entire family together in June and to fish with the boys in South Dakota.  We were all thrilled when he caught the biggest fish!

We would like to thank all of the staff at Internal Medical Associates and the staff at St. Francis Radiology Department for their wonderful support and care.

Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church or Heartland Lutheran High School.
