William
L. Gerbig, 75, of Grand Island died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, at Grand Island
Nebraska Veterans Home.
Memorial
services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Nebraska Veterans Home All Faiths
Chapel. Chaplain Bill Noer will officiate. All Faiths Funeral Home is
in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gerbig was born March 21, 1932, at Grand Island to William and
Lillian (Spencer) Gerbig.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Virginia; two daughters
and a son-in-law, Kris and Brian Sands of Grand Island and Kathy Knutson
of Fort Collins, Colo.; and a son, William C. Gerbig of Grand Island.
Other survivors include nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His parents and a sister, Arlene Reher preceded him in death.
William was raised and received his education in Grand Island, graduating
from Grand Island Senior High, class of 1950. He was selected as Nebraska
All State football guard and All American Guard his senior year.
William was united in marriage to Virginia Sorensen on Nov. 17, 1950.
He entered the United States Army serving from Sept. 1, 1953 to Aug.
31, 1955. They made their home in Grand Island, where he owned and operated
Gerbig Mobil Service Station at 2nd and Cedar Streets. He later worked
for Nash Finch until having a stroke in 1981.
He enjoyed his grandchildren, watching them grow up and spending many
hours visiting with them. He loved hunting and Husker football. He was
a member of the Platt-Duetsche and the Eagles.
Memorials are suggested to the Central Nebraska Humane Society or donor's
choice.
