John W. "Jack" Kimberly

John W. "Jack" Kimberly, 81, of Grand Island died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at St. Francis Medical Center.

John KimberlyMemorial services will be held at All Faiths Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m., followed by a reception at First United Methodist Church. Ashes will be inurned at Westlawn Cemetery at a later date.

Mr. Kimberly was born Nov. 10, 1925, in Rising City to Homer Kimberly and Hazel Herring Kimberly at home. Jack grew up in Paxton and graduated from Paxton High School in 1943.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August 1943. He went overseas in August of 1944 to the Pacific Theater. He was assigned to PT Boat 491, being in New Guinea and in on the invasion of Japan-held Philippines. He was a gunner mate and received a Commendation of Excellence for duty during heavy enemy action fire.

He married Bonnie J. Reed in Gering on Dec. 14, 1947.

For the majority of his career, Mr. Kimberly was territory manager for Cargill-Nutrena Feeds for 28 years, traveling North Central and Central Nebraska. He was honored by being named to the Cargill President's Club, the company's highest honor for territory manager, eight times.

In retirement, he and his wife, Bonnie, enjoyed traveling, visiting friends, and most importantly, spending time with their children. He loved Nebraska football as his main hobby, but he enjoyed just running around the country, sightseeing with his wife and friends.

Jack had an alcohol problem in his early adult years. He quit drinking in October 1955, and always thanked AA and God for saving his life and for being able to give his wife and family a decent lifestyle.

Jack was a member of First United Methodist Church of Grand Island. He was of Methodist faith all his life. Jack was a member of the American Legion of Paxton, VFW of Grand Island and the Grand Island Saddle Club.

His was preceded in death by his eldest son, Doug, who passed away in 1984.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Bonnie; their son, Greg Kimberly, and wife, Charleen, of York; daughter, Kelly Kimberly, and her husband, Gary Fuller, of Houston; and daughter, Kerry Kimberly and friend, Jeff Parish, of Lincoln.
