Laura
Matthiesen, 99, of Grand Island, died Christmas
Day December 25, 2007 at Wedgewood Care Center.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at the United Congregational
Church. The Reverend Lonnie Logan will officiate. Burial will
be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths
Funeral Home.
Mrs. Matthiesen was born July 28, 1908, in Grand Island, the daughter
of John and Bertha (Schimmer) Schaupdach.
Survivors are daughters and son-in-law, Mary and Robert
Kaeiser and Barbara Kendall, all of Manitowoc, WI; son and daughter-in-law,
Ernest J. and Rosemary Matthiesen of Aurora, NE; sister-in-law, Dora
Tucker; twelve grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, five
great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents;
five brothers, Bill, Chris, Alfred, Emil and Johnny Schaupdach; a
sister, Clara Huston and a grandchild, Steven Matthiesen.
Laura grew up on the family farm south of Grand Island from where
she attended District 4 School. She was united in marriage
to Ernest Matthiesen on October 11, 1931, in Aurora, Nebraska. Three
children, two girls and a boy were born to their union. Laura
was a stay at home wife and mother until the children were older,
then she worked at Wolbachs store in downtown Grand
Island. She lived in her Grand Island home for several years after the
death of Ernest, on December 20, 1994. She then moved to Lebensraum
Retirement Home and later to Wedgewood Care Center where she resided until her death.
Laura has been a member of the United Congregational
Church for many years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and sewing. She
sewed a lot for her family and grandchildren and will be remembered
for her good cooking and baking.
