Mr. Olson was born March 7, 1928, in Loup City to Eric and Ida (Steen)
Olson.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Dee Olson.
Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Alberta Olson and Cherry Olson;
Jim's nieces, nephews and cousins; and Dee's large family, whom he was
very fond of.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert and Harold
Olson.
He attended Loup City schools, graduating in 1946.
Following graduation, he worked at the Sherman County Times.
He then attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, graduating in 1950,
majoring in journalism with a minor in sociology. While attending college,
he worked for the "Lariat," the university's newspaper.
Following graduation, he worked at the Kearney Hub.
In March 1951, he was drafted in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea for
16 months. He was discharged Feb. 24, 1953.
He returned to the Kearney Hub and then The Grand Island Independent
until 1955, when he and his brothers leased the Loup Valley Queen in
Callaway.
While in Callaway, he met and married Dorla Dee Hoffman on Oct. 6, 1957.
They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family members just
two weeks ago on Oct. 6.
For a short time, he worked at the Omaha World Herald.
In 1957, he returned to Grand Island, where he began a 35-year career
at The Grand Island Independent, retiring in 1992 as production manager.
As production manager, Jim never expected his employees to do anything
he wouldn't do himself.
Jim was a faithful member of Faith United Methodist Church, serving
on numerous boards and committees. He was also a member of Gideons International,
American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was a loving husband and uncle to his many nieces and nephews and
also special family friend, Laurie Lane Farr. Their many visits became
wonderful memories for both Dee and Jim.
Memorials are suggested to Gideons International or Faith United Methodist
Church.
