Carol
Donn “Doc” Swanbom, 81, died Sunday, July 29, 2007 while residing
at the Grand Island Nebraska Veterans Home.
Memorial Services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, August
2nd in the Grand Island Veterans Home All Faiths Chapel,
2300 West Capital. The Reverend Bill Noer and Reverend Catherine
Kuschel will officiate. An additional service will be held
at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 13th at St. Francis Episcopal
Church in Scottsbluff, NE. The Reverend Bob Manasek will officiate. His
remains were cremated and inurnment will be held privately.
All Faiths Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge
of arrangements.
Carol was born August 27, 1925 in Scottsbluff, NE the son of Mary Magdalene (Vanicek) and
Leonard John Swanbom. He attended Scottsbluff Junior College and
was drafted into the United States Army with his service beginning
on June 16, 1944. He served two years in the Army Medical Corp,
attaining the rank of Technician 3rd Grade with the Medical
Laboratory, 42nd General Hospital in Manila and
St. Luke’s International Medical Center in Tokyo. He had been accepted into McArthur’s
Military Band but needed to serve as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Carol
was honorably discharged on May 11, 1946.
Following his service in the military, Carol returned
to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He began dental school
at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1948 where he was a member
of the dental fraternity, Xi Psi Phi. Carol was president of
his freshman dental class and the first president of the Nebraska
Junior American Dental Association from 1949-1950. He received
the George Nakagawa Award, The American Academy of Dental Medicine
Award, and the honor of Outstanding Senior Dental Student upon graduation
in May of 1952.
Carol married Ida Floriene Hensley on November 24, 1949
at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Lincoln, NE. Carol
and Floriene moved to western Nebraska in the summer of 1952 where he took
over his father’s dental practice in Scottsbluff. He
continued his dental practice until his retirement in 1992. Carol
resided in Gering from 1953 until his health required a move to Grand
Island Veteran’s Home in August of 2006.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Mary
and Jim Troxell of Fort Collins, CO, Donn and Becky Swanbom of Paonia,
CO, Janice and Robert Heasty of Montrose, CO, Janet and Stewart Jobes
of Grand Island, Lee Rex and Dawn Swanbom of Greeley, CO and Jon
Swanbom of Scottsbluff, NE, brother Deryl Swanbom of Fort Collins,
CO.
grandchildren, Brad Troxell, Katie and Wade Maulsby,
Caitlin and Anders Swanbom, Julie and Jason Zitterkopf, Maggie Jobes,
Brook Jobes, Hannah Swanbom and Lief Swanbom.
Carol was preceded in death by his loving and devoted
wife, and infant son, Deryl Mont,
his parents, and one brother, Leonard Swanbom.
