Jeanne Marie (Sather) Chandler

Jeanne Marie (Sather) Chandler, 69, of Grand Island died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at her home because of complications following a stroke in July.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. Pastor Kris Rebentisch and Vicar Greg Enderline will officiate. An inurnment will be held at a later date.

There will be a gathering of family and friends at All Faiths Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Jeanne was born March 3, 1939, the daughter of John and Thelma (Hansen) Sather in St. Paul, Minn.

Jeanne is survived by her husband, Fred, and their 10 children: daughters, Kathryn and Jack Eans of Woodland Park, Colo., Angie Sirabella of Albuquerque, N.M., and Angela and Dustin Vokes of Grand Island; sons, David Chandler of Ault, Colo., Paul and Tama Chandler of Bamako, Mali, Africa, Troy Chandler of Grand Island, Dewey and Shelby Chandler of Cozad, Jonah Chandler and James Chandler at home; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Denise and Chester Peterson and Linda and Peter Pfenning, both of Granite Falls, Minn., and one brother, William Sather of Nevis, Minn.

She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on Aug. 6, 1939, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Nevis, Minn. She was also confirmed in the faith in June 1954 at Bethany Lutheran Church.

She began her elementary school education at Redeemer Lutheran School in St. Paul, Minn. After moving to Nevis, she completed her elementary and secondary education there. She also attended Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn., for one year.

Jeanne married Fred William Chandler on July 18, 1959, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Nevis. They lived 12 years in Fairmont, Minn., one year in Tempe, Ariz., and 36 years in Grand Island.

Jeanne's first love was her Lord and Savior, in whom she trusted all her life. Responding to her Lord, she enjoyed leading a ladies' Bible study group for more than 30 years and in teaching Sunday school at Trinity.

She was also a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, as well as being a day care provider and caring for many foster children from Nebraska Children's Home Society and Nebraska Health and Human Services. She served as a Birthright volunteer for many years.

She also enjoyed cooking, reading and vacationing with her family and relatives.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran School of Grand Island, Heartland Lutheran High School, Nebraska Children's Home Society, Birthright Inc. or the donor's choice.
