Fern M. Chase

Fern M. Chase, 100, of Grand Island, died Saturday May 24, 2008, at Bickford Cottage.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Abundant Life Christian Center. The Rev. Stephen Warriner will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mrs. Chase was born Jan. 24, 1908, at Esbon, Kan., the daughter of Guy and Myrtle (Smith) Hancock.

Her husband, Lawrence, preceded her in death in 1985.

Survivors of the immediate family are her son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Maryetta Chase of Bennett, Colo., and a brother, Milford Hancock of Red Cloud.


Also surviving are grandchildren, DeAnn and Howard Hassett of Grand Island, David and Kathy Chase of Marquette; great grandchildren, Jason Douthit, Brooke Musick, Sara Shinkfield, Tifany Albrecht, Ashley Chase, Nathan Hassett, Seth Hassett, Jennifer Baitz; and great-great grandchildren, Jake Douthit, Kailyn Douthit, Joshua Douthit, Kaden Musick and Lane Albrecht.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Deborah Chase Douthit; a great-grandson Joshua Douthit; and nine brothers and sisters.

At the age 3, her family moved to Colorado in a covered wagon and later moved back to Esbon, Kan., where she graduated from high school.

She was united in marriage to Lawrence Lyle Chase in 1928 at Red Cloud. They lived in Esbon and western Kansas before moving to Grand Island in 1944.

Fern was a Luzirs Cosmetic Consultant for over 25 years.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Roberta Rice Circle. She and her husband enjoyed camping, belonging to the Happy Wonderers Camping Club. Fern enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, growing flowers, watching birds, and most of all, spending time with all of her grandchildren, praying for them faithfully.

Memorials are suggested to the food pantry.
