Lydia (Glienke) Christensen

Lydia (Glienke) Christensen, 78, of Grand Island died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at her home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island, with a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. The Rev. Royce Rinehart will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Worship and Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Elk Township Cemetery at Alta, Iowa, with memorial services following at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church at Hanover, Iowa. The Revs. Herman Glienke and David Lyons will officiate.

Mrs. Christensen was born Dec. 7, 1929, on the family farm near Alta, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Marie (Hinkeldey) Glienke. She was raised, receiving her education at St. John's Lutheran School. She was united in marriage to Harold Christensen on Oct. 29, 1950, at St. John's Lutheran Church. They moved to Grand Island in 1967.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and served on many church committees, LWML, Lutheran Layman's League and many other organizations. She was a volunteer at Grand Island Nebraska Veterans Home and St. Francis Medical Center.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Robert (Rhonda) Christensen of Alta, Iowa, Rebecca Christensen McLean (George) of Lincoln, Sherri Martinez (Marty) of Ames, Iowa, and Kevin Christensen of Grand Island; brothers and sisters, Albert and Marilyn Glienke of Aurelia, Iowa, Herman and Delores Glienke of Hialeah, Fla., Marie Lichtenberg of Alta, Iowa, Dorothy and Dwaine Hinkeldey of Alta, Iowa, Ernst and Beverly Glienke of Aurelia, Iowa, Martin and Jeanne Glienke of rural Alta, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Glienke of rural Alta, Iowa, and Elma Hansen of Scottsdale, Ariz.; brothers-in-law, Harold Lussman of Storm Lake, Iowa, Willard Schmidt of Alta, Iowa and Willard and Florence Christensen of Storm Lake, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. In addition to her husband, Harold, who died April 7, 1998, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Henry; sisters, Esther, Alvina and Emma; and a brother-in-law, Lyle Lichtenberg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Heartland Lutheran High School or Trinity Lutheran School.
