Harry Todd Crittenden

Harry Todd Crittenden, 76, of Grand Island died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at the Grand Island Veterans Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Dr. Charles Peek will conduct the services, with inurnment in the church's columbarium.

There will be no visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Crittenden was born May 14, 1932, at Wichita, Kan., to John J. and Ruth Miller Crittenden.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Betty Lou Crittenden of Grand Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Craig Frederick of Page, Ariz.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jacob and Elisabeth Crittenden of Pittsburgh and Paul and Jane Crittenden of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Crittenden of Lincoln; a brother, Jordan Crittenden of Jalisco, Mexico; and a sister, Hope Swaimer of West Grove, Pa.

Todd is also survived by seven grandchildren, including Amanda, Stuart, Piper, Jordan, Brittany, Hunter and Elijah.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Brian and John Crittenden, the Poet and Carpenter; his granddaughter, Mikaylla Crittenden; grandson, Shane Frederick; parents, John and Ruth Crittenden; and his sister, Jane Harris.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Wichita and received his college education at Kansas University. He entered the U.S. Army Aug. 27, 1953, and served our country during the Korean War. Todd was honorably discharged June 8, 1955, at Fort Knox, Ky. He was united in marriage to Betty Lou McCoy on Aug. 7, 1955, at Lawrence, Kan. The couple lived in Lawrence while Todd finished his degree in Business and Advertising.

Following a successful career as a salesman in both Kansas and Missouri, the Crittenden family moved in 1971 to Grand Island, where Todd assumed the position of Advertising Manager at The Grand Island Daily Independent. After nine years at The Independent, Todd changed careers and became a store manager for the Bosselman Truck Plaza, where he continued his employment until his retirement in 2000. Todd was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, serving as an Acolyte, Choir Member and Vestry Member. His hobbies included carpentry, cabinetry, home repair, and furniture refinishing. Around the house, he was a jack-of-all-trades. His interests also included Amateur Theater and sailing. He will be remembered throughout the community for organizing the St. Stephen's Charity players and producing ten Summer Musicals in an outdoor setting at both Stolley Park and the Nebraska Veterans Home.

Todd led a full family life, fathering and raising five children with his wife, Betty Lou, of 52 years. His children display the same diversity and talents he embodied. His offspring included an Artist, a Poet, a Carpenter, an Engineer and a Mathematician.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested St. Stephen's Memorial Fund or Messiah Lutheran Saturday Supper Fund.
