Maj. Rev. Larry Lee Handeland

Larry Lee Handeland, 61, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday September 10, 2008 at the Monarch Hospice House in Lincoln, NE, following a long battle with cancer..

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island.  The Reverend Michael Clark will officiate.  Burial will be at a later date in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, NE.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Larry Lee Handeland was born December 26, 1946, in Story City, Iowa to Orville and Lois (Thompson) Handeland.

Larry is survived by his wife, Barbara of Lincoln, NE; son, Mark Handeland of Goose Creek, SC; daughters, Larissa Handeland and Christina Duran both of Glendale, Arizona and sisters, Darlene Dworak of Shawnee, KS and Cheryl Handeland of Des Moines, IA.

Other survivors include a grandson, Antonio Duran of Glendale, AZ and many beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by a son, Luke; a sister, Myrna Hildal; his parents and his beloved horse Jewelfire.

He grew up in Jewell, Iowa where he graduated from Jewell High School.  He went on to attend Edgewood College in Madison, WI and received a degree in Theology.  Larry then attended Wartburg Theologial Seminary in Dubuque, IA, where he received a Masters Degree in Divinity.  Larry was ordained on July 28, 1985 and began his ministry at Wausau Regional Medical Center in Wausau Wisconsin, St. Lukes Medical Center, and Sioux Falls, Iowa and was Director of Hospital Ministry at Yokota Air Force Base in Japan.  Larry retired from the United States Air Force on May 16, 2005 after serving thirty-eight years as a Chaplain and Medic in the Navy, Marines and Air Force.  Throughout his pastoral career, he served congregations in Nebraska, Texas, Iowa, California, Japan and Germany.

Memorials are suggested to St. Pauls Lutheran Church of Grand Island.
