Gerald D. "Jerry" Hibbeler

Gerald (Jerry) D. Hibbeler, 62, of Grand Island died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Revs. Randy Fett and Bill Pavuk will officiate. Burial with military honors will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery at Glenvil.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island.

Mr. Hibbeler was born Sept. 9, 1945, in Hastings to Oscar and Anke Marie (Dudden) Hibbeler.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Elaine; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and April Hibbeler of Davidson, N.C. and Steve and Haley Hibbeler of Westminster, Colo.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Stan Keiser of Ashland.

Other survivors include granddaughters Abigail, Brooke and Lexi; father-in-law, Melvin Schlachter of Grand Island; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rev. Mel and Rev. Barbara Schlachter of Iowa City, Iowa and Bob and Rev. Ellie Thober of North Platte.

His parents and mother-in-law, Mildred Schlachter; preceded him in death.

Jerry was raised on a family farm near Ayr and graduated from Hastings Senior High, Class of 1963. He also was a graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

On Aug. 8, 1970, he was united in marriage to Elaine Schlachter at Hastings. They have lived in Grand Island since 1973.

Jerry was employed by the USDA Farmers Home Administration, which later became the Farm Service Agency for the past 38 years.

He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the Saddle Club. He enjoyed baseball, Nebraska football and belonged to the GI Joggers.
