Max P. Kunze

Max P. Kunze, 88, of Grand Island died Friday, February 22, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a family prayer service at 10:15. The Rev. Royce Rinehart will officiate.

Burial of ashes will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Rose Hill Cemetery at Palmer. Military honors will be provided by the Palmer American Legion.

There will be no visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kunze was born Sept. 2, 1919, in Howard County to Paul and Ida (Wagner) Kunze.

Survivors of his immediate family include his wife, Fern; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Alan Wieck of Omaha and Jan and Dennis
"Jake" Jakob of Grand Island; a son, Mike Kunze of Grand Island; and a sister, Ella Aschwege of Palmer.

Other survivors are grandchildren, Brian Wieck, Brent Wieck, Jay Jakob, Jon Jakob, Jill Bonczynski and Todd Kunze; four great-grandchildren; and one
step great-grandson.

Max was raised on the family farm near Palmer, receiving his education in country school until the eighth grade and graduating from the Palmer High School Class of 1940. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1941 and served in the European Theatre with a bomber crew. He received the air medal, having been on 58 missions. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Max was united in marriage to Fern Silk on Dec. 26, 1946, at Grand Island. They lived in Palmer for five years before moving to a farm north of Worms, where they farmed for 40 years. They moved to Grand Island in 1991.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW of Grand Island, American Legion of Palmer and the Platt-Duetsche.

His parents, four sisters, Frieda Lautenschlager, Milda Kamper, Helen Bjorklund and Alma Kunze and four brothers, Albert, Walter, Ted, and Reinhardt Kunze, preceded him in death.

Memorials are suggested to the family
