Donald
R. Mason, 70, of Grand Island,
died Saturday October 18, 2008.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian
Church in Grand Island. The
Reverend Dr. Scott Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in
the Grand Island Cemetery with full military honors.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths
Funeral Home.
Mr. Mason was born June 4, 1938 at Iowa City, IA the son of Raymond and Mary (Smith) Stoops.
Survivors are his wife, Doris; children, Deb Dalland
and Roger Dalland of Grand Island, Lynnette Marshall and her friend
Tom Vaught of St. Paul, NE and Todd and Tina Mason of Grand Island;
step children, Barry and Melody Smith of Grand Island and Brenda
and Richard Esquitin of Grand Island; brothers and their spouses,
Leo and Marie Smith of Anaheim, CA and Jim and Sharon Mason of Hampton,
NE; step mother, Evelyn Stoops of Omaha; half sisters and their spouses,
Trudy and James Hartline of Omaha and Judy and John Garreans of Omaha
and half brother and his wife, Stacey and Ruth Stoops of Missouri
Valley, IA.
Other survivors are grandchildren, Travis and Cassie
Baier, Ashley Dalland, Joshua and Ashley Dalland, Amber and Ryan
Ross, Lindsey Marshall, Taryn Mason, Crystal and John Voichahoske,
Joshua Smith, Rachael Esquitin and Gabrielle Esquitin and great grandchildren,
Zaden, Leyton, Sidney and Dylan.
He is preceded in death by his mother Mary Mason, father,
Raymond Stoops, stepfather John Mason and half sister Linda Stafford.
Donald was raised in Lincoln graduating from Lincoln Northeast High School,
class of 1957. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1956 and was honorably
discharged in 1962.
He married Beverly Rother on March 3, 1963, making their
home in Cairo until moving to Grand Island in 1970.
He married Doris Smith on August 25, 1990. He was
employed by Redman Industries, New Holland, Bonnavilla Homes and
the Nash Finch Company as a truck driver for 17 years. He retired
in 1992.
He enjoyed many things in life; his home, gardening,
roses, hunting, remodeling old houses and traveling.
He is a member of the Eagles and Saddle Club.
