Robert L. Mettenbrink Sr.

Robert L. Mettenbrink, Sr., 85, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Saint Francis Medical Center Skilled Care.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island, with a family prayer service at 10:15.  Reverend Jack Gillam and Vicar Josh Leiseber will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Mettenbrink was born January 23, 1924 at Grand Island the son of Charles and CarolinaLena” (Fischer) Mettenbrink.

Survivors are his wife May; sons and daughters-in-law, James Charles and Lena Mettenbrink of Brookings, SD, Robert, Jr. and Diane Mettenbrink of Grand Island, David John and Bernice Mettenbrink of York, NE, Thomas Paul and Karen Mettenbrink of Grand Island and Steven Roy and Mary Mettenbrink of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law, Rose Mary and Dean Ringlein of Kearney and sister, Mary Thompson of Nashville, TN.

Other survivors are 13 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren.  He was welcomed into heaven by his parents and sisters, Wilma Belangie and Carolyn Emery.

Robert was raised on a farm north of Grand Island receiving his education at St. Johns Lutheran School north of Grand Island and Grand Island Senior High. 

He was united in marriage to May L. Simonson on September 16, 1945 at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms, NE.  Together they continued to farm north of Grand Island

Memberships included Trinity Lutheran Church; Lutheran Laymen’s League, Platt Duetsch, Grand Island Rural Fire District and was one of the original board members for Northwest High School.

Memorials are suggested to either Trinity Lutheran School or Heartland Lutheran High School
