Elaine Underkofler

Elaine Underkofler, 96, of Grand Island, died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Tiffany Square Center.

Private family services will be held at a later date with her ashes entombed in the Trinity United Methodist Church Columbarium.

All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Underkofler was born October 27, 1912 at Gooding, Idaho the daughter of Samuel and Ruth (Bolton) Chaney.

Her husband Bill Underkofler preceded her in death in 1997.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Larry Rutar of Grand Island. 

Other survivors are grandchildren, Jennifer DeLaet and Jacy Bruno.

Elaine was raised in Idaho, Oregon and Washington graduating from high school in Spokane, Washington in 1929.  She received a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University.  She moved to Olympia, WA where she worked for Washington Department of Education.  Later she was employed for the Federal Government.  She also taught school at Modesto California State College.

She was united in marriage to Bill Underkofler on July 24, 1939 in California.  They moved to Boise, Idaho in 1952 before coming to Grand Island in 1979.

Elaine was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school for many years and serving on the church’s education committee.  She enjoyed music, reading and spending time with family.

In addition to her husband she is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Helen Tracy, brother, Sam Chaney, Jr. and daughter Merry Stewart.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Boise State University Scholarship Fund.
