Harold D. Eckert

Harold D. Eckert, 80, of Grand Island, died Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the Grand Island Nebraska Veterans Home.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home.  Dan Naranjo will officiate.  Burial of ashes will be in the Nebraska Veterans Home Cemetery with military honors by the United Veterans Honor Guard and Nebraska National Honor Guard.

Gathering of family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mr. Eckert was born July 15, 1929 at Fremont, NE the son of Charles and Bertha (Reker) Eckert.

Survivors are his wife Mary; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Deb Eckert of Crete, NE; step-daughters and their husbands, Susan and George Mead of Wood River, NE and Linda and Jim Shannon of Fremont, CA and step-son and his wife, Warren and Wanda Moritz of Hanover, MD.

Other survivors are nine grandchildren and his faithful companion Bo.  His parents; grandson, Brian and 16 brothers and sisters welcomed him into heaven.

Harold was raised and received his education in Fremont, NE.  He entered the United States Army on August 7, 1952 serving in the Korean War.  He was honorably discharged on July 10, 1954. 

He was united in marriage to Mary Moritz on July 19, 1974. Harold worked as a plumber by profession having worked for Herman Plumbing for many years.

He is a member of the Eagles in Fremont.  Harold enjoyed wood working, making toys for the children and fishing. 

Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans or the Central Nebraska Humane Society.
