"Herb" Hubert Hoseph Horacek

‘Herb’ Hubert Joseph Horacek, 88, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010 after years of emphysema.

In honor of his wishes cremation has taken place.  There will be no visitation.  Burial of ashes will be held at a later date at Marcus, Iowa.

All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mr. Horacek was born May 18, 1921 on the family farm near Cairo to Anthony and Emma (Klinkacek) Horacek.

Survivors include his wife Lillian (Billie) and his sister, Barbara Horacek of Omaha.

He is also survived by his favorite nephew and his wife, Larry and Janet Horacek of Blair, NE.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Anthony and nephew, Anthony.

Herb graduated from Amherst High School, class of 1939.  He joined the CCC in January 1942, following the attack on Pearl Harbor.  He went to work for the U.S. Government in Washington D.C.  He was united in marriage to Lillian Frances Collins on November 18, 1950 in Washington D.C. 

In 1965 he entered the Foreign Service, serving in London, Ghana, Washington D.C., Beirut, Brasilia, (Ivory Coast) Abidjan and Jordan.  He retired in September 1980.  They made their home in Grand Island in May 1981.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.  Herb enjoyed golf, fishing, wood working, cards and watching sports on television.
