Donald "Don" L. Johnson

Donald “Don” L. Johnson, 77, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Saint Francis Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Congregational Church. The Reverend Lonnie Logan will officiate. There will be no visitation as Don’s family is honoring his wish for cremation. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in North Carolina. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mr. Johnson was born on September 7, 1932 at Pocahontas, IA, the son of Walter and Beatrice (Eaton) Johnson.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sharon; children and their spouses, Lisa and Mike Hannon, Debby Foy, Beth Blackwelder, all of Concord, NC, Trevor and Chris Rodenbaugh of Grand Island, Stacy Rodenbaugh of Grand Island and Michelle and Chad Been of Bellevue, NE; brother, Richard Johnson of Sioux City, IA; sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia and Don McEmany of Waverly, IA and Grace Martins of Atlantic, IA; and sisters-in-law, Sally Johnson and Joyce Johnson.

Other survivors are 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend.

He was welcomed into heaven by his parents, three brothers, and a daughter, Becky White.

Don was raised and received his schooling in Pocahontas. He entered the United States Army on November 16, 1949, serving during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged on December 3, 1952. Don was united in marriage to Sharon K. Knapp. Following their marriage the couple made Grand Island their home.

Don was a painter for most of his life. He enjoyed spending the winters in Texas. He was affiliated with the Platt-Duetsche, Shrine, Masons, Elks, and Legion. Don enjoyed people, especially his friends and family. He leaves behind many special friends.
