Garry Leonard Smith

Garry Leonard Smith, 63, of Grand Island, died Thursday, April 29, 2010 while driving truck through Laramie, Wyoming.

Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.  The Reverend Todd Philipsen will officiate.  Military honors will be provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the Nebraska Army National Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday with a parish rosary at 7 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.  All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mr. Smith was born February 5, 1947 at Stanton, NE the son of Melvin and Irene (Lehman) Smith. 

Survivors are his wife Dorothy; step children and their spouses, Scott and Christine Cuba of Shawnee, KS, Shirley and Paul Zeek of Omaha and Stanley and Ginger Cuba of Overland Park, KS; sister, Bev Holtz of Dallas, TX and sister-in-law, Ardie Smith of West Point, and stepfather, Leland Kind of Beemer.

Other survivors are his step grandchildren, Kirstin, Hailey, Samantha, Wesley and Bruce.  He was welcomed into heaven by his parents; sisters, Mary Behrendsen and Ardith Pagels and brother, Bob Smith. 

Garry attended Beemer Public School graduating from Beemer High School, class of 1965.  He enlisted in the United States Army and on February 7, 1966 was sent over seas to Vietnam with the 1 st Infantry of the Medical Corps as a medic for eleven months and then to Fort Sam Houston at San Antonio, TX for two years. 

Garry worked for twenty years in Law Enforcement at Madison, NE and for the Nance County Sheriff’s Department at Fullerton, NE.  On September 16, 1989 Garry and Dorothy (Dobson) Cuba were united in marriage at St. Peters Catholic Church at Fullerton.  They resided on Pleasant Valley Rd just outside of Fullerton before moving to Grand Island in June of 1998.  Garry was a professional truck driver working for Signor Trucking of Norfolk at the time of his death. 

He was a member of the Fullerton American Legion.  Memorials are suggested to the family.
