Richard L. Sims, 76, of Grand Island, died following a lengthy illness on July 15, 2011, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home.
Father Richard L. Piontkowski is officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarview
Cemetery in Doniphan. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at
the funeral home.
Dick was born June 20, 1935, in Giltner to Melvin and Leola ( Griffin) Sims.
Survivors include his long time loving partner, Connie Scherer; daughter Michelle Dowling and husband Rusty and their children JD and Ellissa of Katy, TX; and daughter Sandi Ortiz of McKinney, TX and her children Dalton, Carlee and Megan; Connie’s children whom he considered his own, Doug and Dana Knopik of Papillion, NE and their children Brandi and Josh Bruening and Kayla Knopik, and Shayne Scherer and his children Drew and Kennedy Scherer of Omaha. He is also survived by, his sister and brother-in-law Carol and Jodi LaBrie and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jerry Sims; his sister and brother-in-law Re and Red Consbruck; and his nephew Bartt LaBrie.
He was raised and received his education in Giltner, NE. He served in the United States Air Force, was honorably discharged December 12, 1958, and lived in Grand Island his entire adult life. Dick spent many years at Diers Motor working and supervising the body shop. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed bowling and his membership with the Platt Duetsche.
The family would like to thank Jubi and Barb of AseraCare Hospice, the staff at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island and the Nebraska Medical Center Kidney Transplant Team for their care and concern during Richard’s illness.
