On June 28, 1941 Kenneth and Lila were married at the Wesleyan church
in Page, Nebraska. Shortly thereafter (February, 1942) Kenneth served
in World War II leaving Lila alone. During that time (1943) Lila gave
birth to her daughter Philisha (Pam) Ehrismann and they stayed in a small
shack near Kenneth’s folks on the Missouri river bottom about 20
miles from Wagner, South Dakota. Lila said that this was one of the happiest
times in her life.
In 1945 Kenneth returned from the military and he and Lila purchase
a home in Avon, South Dakota. Their son, Kenneth Ellard Masden was born
there in 1946. In 1948 Kenneth and his father exchanged homes and the
family moved back to the river bottom near Wagner.
After being flooded out several years, they moved to a farm near Worthington,
Minnesota and shortly thereafter moved on to Ocheyedan, Iowa where the
children grew up and graduated from high school. During these years in
addition to taking care of her children, she took care of Aunt Anna,
Uncle Glenn Little, Thelma (Summers) Philippi and Lila’s mother
Emma (Wood) Canaday.
In 1962, Kenneth found employment in Lincoln, Nebraska and Lila remained
in Ocheyedan to allow Ellard to complete high school. In 1964 Lila joined
Kenneth in Lincoln, Nebraska where they resided for 35 years. Here again,
Lila cared for her mom Emma as well as Kenneth’s mom Alice Masden.
Upon retirement in 1998 Kenneth and Lila moved to Grand Island, Nebraska
to be near their daughter Pam and Pam’s family. When their health
started to fail, in November of 2003 they moved into the Grand Island
Veteran’s home where they both received wonderful care during the
