Maurice F. McNerney, 89, of Grand Island, formerly of Giltner, died Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Tiffany Square in Grand Island.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Giltner. There will be a Rosary at 1:30 p.m.
prior to the service. Father Dennis Hunt will officiate. Burial
will be in Giltner Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Mr. McNerney was born April 18, 1922 in Atchinson, Kansas, the son of William and Nellie (Madden) McNerney.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Kathy (Dusty) Kohl of Hastings, Robert McNerney of Giltner and Liz Cornwell of Grand Island; and a sister, Helen Manion of Grand Island.
He is also survived by three grandchildren, Casey Cornwell, Laura McNerney and Karly McNerney; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews and a special four-legged friend, Lucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty McNerney, on April 9, 2005; brother, Donald McNerney; daughter-in-law, Jo McNerney; two nephews and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Maurice grew up and received his education in Oshkosh, Nebraska. He was united in marriage to Betty Joan Gimpel on July 2, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Giltner. Following their marriage, the couple made their home on the family farm in rural Giltner. Maurice farmed his entire life, operating a mechanic shop ‘McNerney Repair’ on the farm. Over the years, he was employed by Ranard Well Drilling and Harv’s Custom Combining of Giltner.
At the urging of his wife, he retired in his 70’s. Maurice was a resident of East Park Villa in Aurora for two years, before moving to Tiffany Square in Grand Island in 2010.
He was a member and volunteer at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed his annual vegetable garden, and fishing in his spare time. He was a regular at the auctions and was a ‘hoarder’ before it was a word. Morris and Betty spent many enjoyable summers traveling with friends. Most of all, Maurice enjoyed his grandchildren and spending time with them.
