Mary J. Sondergaard

Mary J. Sondergaard, 61 of Grand Island died Saturday, February 11, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center.

Mary J. SondergaardServices will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church.  Reverend Harvey Johnson will officiate.  Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sondergaard was born May 11, 1950 at Sutton, West Virginia the daughter of Woodrow and Norma Jean (Dodrill) Thomas.

Her husband Edmund James Sondergaard, Sr. preceded her in death on October 23, 2006.

Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Edmund Jr. “Jim” and Lisa Sondergaard of Grand Island and daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Scott Becker of Grand Island; her mother, Norma Jean Thomas of West Virginia; mother-in-law, Lilly Sondergaard of Grand Island; brothers and sister-in-law, Jim and Janette Thomas of West Virginia and Steve Thomas of West Virginia; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barb and JR Cook of West Virginia, Becky and Gary Keyser of Ohio and Shirley Meeks of California and sister-in-law and her husband, Sharon and Art Hogan of Omaha.

Other survivors are her grandchildren, Maria, Meagan, Taylor, Evan, Kaitlin, Thomas and Tyler; and nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Woodrow Thomas and father-in-law, Edmund P. Sondergaard.

Mary was raised at Muddlety, West Virginia graduating from Nicholas County High School in 1968.  She attended Glenville State College in West Virginia. 

She was united in marriage to Edmund James Sondergaard on September 6, 1970 at Browns Mills, NJ.  They made Grand Island their home since 1971.  Mary worked at Swift for over 30 years.

Mary was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.  She loved traveling with her family, shopping, watching football; she loved her dogs and cats. Most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren.  During her earlier life she played on a traveling softball team and later on a coed softball team. 

Memorials are to be given in care of the family to be designated at a later date.
