Carla Mary Mitchell

Carla Mary Mitchell, age 79, of Grand Island, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 1, 2025 at CHI St. Francis surrounded by her loving family. Carla was an organ and tissue donor. This selfless act will save and improve the quality of life for dozens of people. She was able to give the gift of life to others. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 8th at 2pm at All Faiths Funeral Home with Dan Naranjo officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 7th from 3-5pm at All Faiths Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Condolences can be left at www.giallfaiths.com. Carla was born on May 14, 1946 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Alfred and Margaret (Dodds) Lemke. As soon as she was old enough to travel on the Queen Mary, she and her mother joined her father, a World War II veteran, in the United States. The family eventually settled in Washington, Iowa, where she attended school, graduating from Washington High in 1964. On May 10, 1965 she was united in marriage to Michael “Mike” Mitchell and they had two awesome children. The family lived in a few different towns in Iowa before Mike's work brought them to Grand Island in 1971, where they raised said awesome children to adulthood, escaping to Salina, Kansas in 1989. Carla and Mike returned to make Grand Island their home again in 2013. Carla made several cherished friends everywhere due to her caring, compassionate, easygoing, and welcoming nature. Carla worked in bookkeeping and clerical work the majority of her career, enjoying the time she spent with her coworkers at Beatrice Foods, CHL Corporation, and others in Grand Island. Probably her favorite job, however, was when she was a "House Mom" at a residential home for women with mental illness - she was definitely a nurturer. Carla loved (quite possibly lived) to cross stitch; she was truly gifted and made many, many exquisite pieces for her home and for her friends, family, and others. She won ribbons at the fair after her friends convinced her to enter some of her work. She found great joy in spending time with her grandkids and attending their sports, plays, concerts and other activities. She also loved to travel wherever and whenever she could; she was so looking forward to visiting her son and daughter-in-law in Las Vegas, which unfortunately had been sidelined twice recently due to illness. Carla had a wonderful and sarcastic sense of humor and knew how to make everyone around her laugh. She enjoyed feeding her family, which if you know us, you can tell. Carla was a game show wiz, which kept both her intelligent mind and wit as razor-sharp as ever. She also loved to watch true crime shows which kept us all "in check", as from those she learned how to hide a body. Carla loved dogs and babies and took great pleasure in spoiling her grandbabies and all the dogs in her life, including her beloved dachshunds, first Cooper and most recently, Frank. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Michael “Mike” Mitchell of the home; children, Todd (Tara) Mitchell of Las Vegas and Michelle Mitchell of Kearney; granddaughter, Lily Mitchell-Muehlhausen of Lincoln; siblings, Philip Lemke, Janette (Peter) Edwards, Allan (Jenny) Lemke and Richard (Diana) Lemke; nieces and nephews, Emily (Justin) Streeter, Ian Edwards, Matt Edwards, and Jillian Edwards, as well as many extended family members and several special lifelong and newfound friends. Carla was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Andrew Mitchell; granddaughter, Raini Ann Mitchell and nephew, Erik Lemke.
