Don Lavon Steele

Don Lavon Steele, age 90, of Grand Island, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the Douglas County Health Center in Omaha. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 11am at All Faiths Funeral Home with Dan Naranjo officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors will take place at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans. Condolences can be left at www.giallfaiths.com. Don was born on February 2, 1936 in Grand Island to Carl Larry and Pearl Emily (Voorhees) Steele. He attended school in Grand Island. On February 17, 1954, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served until he was honorable discharged on January 31, 1956. After being discharged he worked construction in Chicago. While there he met Shelby Hester and the couple was united in marriage and started their family. On August 4, 1975, he was united in Marriage to Irene “Rea” and the couple shared 47 wonderful years, before her passing on March 22, 2023. Don was employed as the lead mechanic at the Ordnance Plant. He also worked on the side doing construction, roofing and installing air conditioning units. Don found joy in rebuilding and refurbishing classic cars. Over the years he attended many car shows and won numerous trophies and awards. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Don was proud of his military service and found great pride in being actively involved in the local VFW. He supported his fellow veterans however he could, whether donating to charities or helping sponsor the Hero Flights to Washington D.C. Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Gay Wen Steele of Plano, TX, Leslie JoAnn Steele Taylor of Harrisburg, IL, Jonathan Lavon Steele of Lexington, NE and Daniel Patrick Steele of Kearney, NE; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and best friends, Merle Palmberg of Licking, MO and Leroy Kramer of Grand Island. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Irene “Rea” Steele; mother, Pearl Robb Parker; stepfather, Robert Kuehner; sons, Larry Allen Steele and Donnie Lavern Steele; son in-law, Thomas Taylor; aunt, Ina Chandler and a daughter in-law.
