Eldon D Beckstrom

Eldon D. Beckstrom, 92 of Grand Island died on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Tiffany Square Care Home. To honor Eldon’s wishes cremation was chosen. A Gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home. Celebration of Life services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Burial of ashes will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy and Grand Island Veteran’s Honor Guard. Eldon was born on January 26, 1924 in Stromsburg, son of Verner and Lillie (Swedenburg) Beckstrom. Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, Gary (Deb) Beckstrom of Grand Island, Tony (Joanie) Beckstrom of Grand Island, Richard (Dianne) Beckstrom of Apache Junction, AZ, and Scott Beckstrom of Glendale, AZ; brother, Marvin (Pat) Beckstrom of Omaha; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; along with numerous extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; wives, Geil and Mary; brothers, Gerald, Irvin and Marland, and sister, Corrine Wiersma. Eldon grew up near Swede Home on the family farm he attended country school until the 8th grade. After his father died, Eldon left school to help with the family farm. In August of 1944, Eldon drafted into the U.S. Navy serving during World War II until his honorable discharge in June of 1946. On September 23, 1949 he was united in marriage to Geil Courter. This union was blessed with four sons, after Geil’s death in December of 1973 Eldon took on the task of raising four sons with enthusiasm. Following their marriage they made their home in Kimball, where Eldon drove for Nielson Trucking; and was contracted to transport mail. After he moved to Grand Island in 1956, he started driving for Union Pacific Motor Freight until his retirement in 1984. While dancing at the Eagles club, Eldon met Mary Solomon whom he married on May 5, 1982. Eldon had a lifelong passion for music; he loved to play his keyboard and was a self-taught guitarist. He was also in a small band for several years. Eldon enjoyed Ballroom dancing, camping in younger years, and attending family reunions. As a proud Nebraskan, Eldon was an avid Husker fan, and enjoyed listening to Grand Island Senior High Football on the radio. For many years, Eldon and Mary enjoyed bowling and was a part of several local bowling leagues. He was also a member of the VFW and Trinity United Methodist Church.
