Everett D. Wiss

Everett D. Wiss, 89, of Grand Island, NE, formerly of Sikeston, Mo. and Rogers, Ark., died Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014. Celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Reverend Jack Gillam will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Air Force. Visitation will be an hour prior the service at the church. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Everett was born January 15, 1925 in Bingham, Illinois, to Xaver and Minnie (Ulbricht) Wiss. Survivors include five children and their spouses, Carol and Duane Huisman of West DesMoines, IA, Gary Wiss and Carolyn Zezima of New York, NY, Kathy Cornelius of Grand Island, NE and Rick Cornelius of Grand Island, NE, Joanne and Ed Desch of Bozeman, MT and Donna Wiss of Springfield, VA; and sisters, Dorothy Koehrer of St. Louis, MO and Jeannie Worker of Klamath, CA; and sister-in-law, Mildred Bartlett of Sikeston, MO. Those also left to cherish his memory include eleven grandchildren, Nathan (Brenda) Huisman, Aaron (Sarah) Huisman, Ethan (JoAnna) Huisman, Jason (Jacey) Cornelius, Jami (Tony) Bauer, Alex Wiss, Jacob (Heather) Desch, Joseph Desch, and Maggie, Lily and Aidan Donahue; eight, almost nine, great-grandchildren and numerous other loving family members. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Magdalene Wiss on June 9, 2013; his parents; two brothers, Harold Wiss and Lawrence Wiss; and three sisters, Mildred Hoffman, Evelyn Whitehead and Annabelle Mitchell. Everett grew up on the family farm in rural Bingham, Illinois. He graduated from Vandalia High School, class of 1942. He was drafted into the United States Army June 3, 1943. Everett was united in marriage to Mary Noyes on June 29, 1946, in Sikeston, Mo. His service with the military spanned more than 41 years. He served during WWII; volunteered for active duty service during the Vietnam War and served as a Military Airlift pilot transporting cargo to air bases around the world. Everett was honorably discharged September 1, 1973 as a Major with the United States Air Force. He was then employed by the Federal Aviation Administration from 1969 to 1987. He served at flight service stations in Goodland, KS, Grand Island, NE, Norwalk, IA and Ft. Dodge, IA. It was with pride that Everett attended the WWII monument dedication in Washington D.C on May 29, 2004. Everett was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) and Retired Officers Association (ROA). Everett’s spiritual faith was an important part of his life and he often expressed his gratitude to his Savior. Everett was a gifted woodworker and enjoyed refinishing furniture.
