George L. Harris

George L. Harris, 76, of Aurora died Monday, March 17, 2014 at Aurora Memorial Hospital. Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church of Aurora, 1104 A Street, with Reverend Mary Scott officiating. To honor George’s wishes, cremation will take place following the service. Burial of ashes will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the church. All Faiths Funeral Home of Grand Island is serving the family. George was born July 4, 1937 in North Platte to Ivan and Lulu (Berry) Harris. Father to many, he is survived by two daughters, Kimberly (James) Murray of Enid, Oklahoma and Barbara Pinkelman of Aurora; a son, Dana (Robin) Harris of Chapman; daughter-in-law, Lori Harris of York; and two sisters, Carol Aten of North Platte and Linda Harris of Grand Island. Those also left to cherish his memory include seven grandchildren, Eric (Christine) Harris, Mattea Debauche, Kaeli Kaiser, Meghan Kaiser, Kiefer Harris, Jacob Pinkelman and Taylor Harris; and three great-grandchildren, Brayden Lee Harris, Mathias Debauche and soon to arrive, Emmaleigh Harris. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth on August 24, 2005; two sons, Gordon Harris and Mark Harris; brother, Wayne Harris; sister, Janet Lopeparo and granddaughter, Katie Harris. George was a graduate of Grand Island Senior High. He attended Kearney State College, receiving a Master of Arts in Education. He and Ruth Bahn were united in marriage on August 24, 1957. They made their home in Marquette where George pursued a teaching and coaching career with Marquette School. He started the football program at the school and was also the principal for over ten years. In 1989, with mixed emotions, he became principal at Wheeler Central in Bartlett. After retiring, George was employed at Modern Motel in Aurora and Wal-Mart in Grand Island. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Aurora United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Nebraska Coaches Association. George would fish wherever there was water and would golf wherever there was a green. However, the Marquette School was his life. According to George, “They’re great kids, great people, I wish it could go on forever.” He will be remembered for the love, honor and respect he instilled in everyone he met. Memorials are suggested to the family.
