Janet Lea Shanahan

Janet Lea Shanahan, 62, of Grand Island died on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at her home. Celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Father Jonathan Sorensen will officiate. To honor Janet’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Janet was born June 12, 1953 at Clovis, NM, to John and Margaret (Zulkoski) Augustyn. She grew up in Elba and Farwell, graduating from St. Paul High School, Class of 1971. She then graduated from Kearney State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She was united in marriage to John R. Shanahan on December 27, 1975 at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The couple made their home in Kearney where Janet was employed as a dispatcher for the Kearney Police Department. They relocated to Grand Island in 1989. Janet was a social worker for the Department of Health and Human Services until she retired. Janet was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, served on the Board of Directors of Child Saving Institute; was co-founder of KAAA – Kearney Area Adoption Agency; and was a past president of Gates Elementary PTA. She loved children, and enjoyed the family gatherings and the children that were there. She also loved decorating her home and crafting. Her family will remember her love of journaling, her amazing cooking and her love of flowers. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, John; her children, Matthew Shanahan of Lincoln and Maggie Shanahan of Grand Island; mother, Margaret Stefanowicz of Farwell; brother Frank (Natalie) Stefanowicz of Grand Island; brothers-in-law, Bill (Carol) Shanahan of NC and Robert (Paula) Shanahan of GA; nieces and nephew, Rylie, Megan and Nathan; and her two four-legged friends, Buddy and Jack. Janet was preceded in death by her father, John Augustyn; step-father, Gilbert Stefanowicz; brother, Jerry Augustyn; sister, Mary Augustyn; paternal grandparents, Charles and Johanna Augustyn; maternal grandparents, Frank and Matilda Zulkoski; step-grandparents, Anton and Emma Stefanowicz; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Pat and Elaine Shanahan. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.
