"Jo" JoAnn Meyer

(Jo) JoAnn Meyer, 86 of Grand Island, died Monday, December 25, 2017, at Brookefield Park in the care of Asera Hospice in St. Paul, NE. Services will be held Saturday December 30th at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 12th and Wheeler, in Grand Island. Reverend Adam Snoberger will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday December 29th from 5pm-7pm at the All Faiths Funeral Home. JoAnn was born April 22, 1931, on a farm near Edgar, NE, to Fred and Minnie (Helwig) Sigman. She was married to Melvin Meyer on October 1, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Grand Island. Survivors include her five children, Jeri (Donald) Erickson of Grand Island, Tom (Carol) Meyer of Bettendorf, IA, Patti (Jim Calonico) Meyer of Oakland, CA, Brad (Marcella Torres) Meyer of Martinez, CA, and Staci (Matt) Matsui of Omaha. Her grandchildren include the children of Jeri Erickson: Justin Schneiderheinz, Katie (John) Pebeck, and Halie (Jared) Osburn; and the children of Tom and Carol Meyer: Kendra (Yasha) Avshalumov, Amber Meyer (fiancé Elliot Galey), and Megan (Curtis) Newman. Her great-grandchildren include: Karter and Karlee Kluthe, children of Katie; and, Athena, child of Halie and her husband Jared. She is also survived by her sister, Lois Saathoff of Ft. Collins, CO. JoAnn attended Edgar country school and graduated from Edgar High School. After graduating from Grand Island College of Business, she worked for the Veteran’s Administration Hospitals in both Grand Island, NE and in Rapids City, SD. Upon returning from work in Rapids City, she resumed working in the VA Hospital in Grand Island and in 1954 she and Mel moved to a farm at St. Libory. She worked at Brandeis in the mid-1970s. Jo obtained her real estate license in 1979 and in 1982 Jo and Mel left the farm and moved to Grand Island to sell real estate full time. She was a co-owner in several small businesses, including the SunSpot tanning salon and ReMax Realty. JoAnn was raised as a Methodist, then was confirmed as a Lutheran for her marriage to Melvin, was a long-time member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Worms and then, the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. At Trinity Lutheran Church JoAnn participated in the Altar Guild, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and the Bloodmobile. She was a member of the Grand Island Women’s Club, the Saddle Club, the Platte-Deutsch Ladies Auxilary, the Alpha Sigma Sorority and the Liederkranz, and had a good time with the local Red Hat Ladies. JoAnn enjoyed her family, fashion, and going to dances with Melvin and their friends. After Melvin passed, she lived at Riverside in assisted living and the Memory Care Unit enjoying the wonderful staff and other residents. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Meyer, her parents, and brother Jack Sigman. The family requests that memorials be given to Trinity Lutheran School or Trinity Lutheran Church.
