Kay Clarke

Kay Clarke Leah “Kay” Clarke, 73, of Grand Island died Friday, April 5, 2024, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Celebration of Life Service will be at 10:30 AM Friday, April 12th at First Faith United Methodist Church. Reverend Ray Stone will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the GILT Jr. Program. Funds will be used as a scholarship for to participate in the summer theatre camp. Kay was born on November 3, 1950, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She is the daughter of Thompson Lanius Clarke and Leah (Knott) Clarke. Kay graduated from Joseph Moore Davidson High School in 1968. Kay received several degrees after, including bachelor's and master's degrees from the following colleges: Millsaps College, Indiana University, and Louisiana State University. Kay taught English at many different schools throughout her career. She was an English Instructor for Grand Island Public Schools and Central Community College. She retired from teaching after 40 years of making a difference in the lives of her students. She belonged to various organizations including First Faiths United Methodist Church, Alpha Delta Kappa, Phi Mu, Scrapbooking clubs, book clubs, and “Drama Mamas”, to name just a few. Kay had a passion for life and her family. “Gammie” was cherished by her grandsons whom she spoiled on every occasion. Kay had a blast traveling and received many stamps in her passport. Scrapbooking was a creative outlet for her as well as making memories. Each grandson had a “book” (or 6) that they looked at with her every time they were together. Reading was another passion for Kay. Her keen sense of the English language gave her insights that no one else thought of. She adored teaching English and was known for correcting your grammar and making sure stories were just so and never exaggerated. Kay built many relationships with her students and would always stop anytime she saw them around town to catch up on what they had been up to. Kay was a wonderful cook with a sweet tooth; she always saved room for dessert or ate it first. Finally, Kay will always be known for her fierce love of the LSU Tigers. She would never miss a game and could always be seen wearing purple and gold. She was a great example of a southern belle and was known by many for her genuine kindness. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Meg Winski of Lafayette, Louisiana; Leah (Devin) Borer of Grand Island, Nebraska; grandchildren, Greyson, Lanius, and Eli. Close to her heart were her stepchildren, Zunie Stovall of Texas; Millicent (Randall) Grove of Texas; William (Jen) Stovall of Texas; and her newfound brother, Gene Williams of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents.
