Larry Alan Johnson

Larry Johnson, 78, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, at Tiffany Square in Grand Island, surrounded by loved ones. He had a courageous 13-year battle with brain cancer, teaching us all humility and patience. Visitation will be from 3-5 pm Sunday, August 3, 2025, at All Faith’s Funeral Home, Grand Island, Nebraska. Services will be held at 10 am, Monday, August 4th, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island, with Kevin Geurink officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the church’s YouTube channel, First Presbyterian Church of Grand Island - YouTube. Burial with military honors will follow at Arborville Cemetery near Polk, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the family. Larry was born June 15, 1947, to Lyle and Mildred (Crossant) Johnson in Stromsburg, Nebraska. He attended Stromsburg Elementary School until fifth grade, when he moved with his family to Polk, where he completed his education and graduated in 1965. Following high school graduation, he joined the Navy in 1966 and served as a hospital corpsman until his honorable discharge in 1970. Two of his four years were spent serving with the Marines, including a year with the Combined Action Platoon in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. On June 19, 1971, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Kealiher. They recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Larry and Carolyn were blessed with three children, Carrie, Kristi, and Craig. In August of 1972, he attended the Physician Assistant Program sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic and graduated in June 1973. He was one of the first PA’s to practice in Nebraska and helped formulate legislation still used today. He was the first to pass the Proficiency Exam in Surgery in Nebraska and was one of the first to receive the designation of Distinguished Fellow from the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Larry was a long-time member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Iowa and Nebraska Academy of Physician Assistants. During his professional career, he worked in Family Practice, General Surgery, and Orthopedic Surgery. Larry was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Island, serving as a Deacon and Usher. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. His true love was archery, which he enjoyed his entire life. He was a member of the Third City Archers and owned and operated Precision Arrow and Designs. He was a self-taught scrimshander and completed many pieces during his lifetime. In 1984, he was chosen to be listed in the Outstanding Young Men of America, and in 2008, he was listed in Cambridge Who’s Who. He was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, Rod. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn, of Grand Island; daughter, Carrie, of Lincoln, and her children, Alex and Sophi; and his daughter, Kristi, of Grand Island, and her children, Brooklynn, Maks, and Caitlin; and son Craig, of Lincoln, and his wife, Carrie.
