Lon P. Warneke

Lon P. Warneke, 77, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023, at his home in Granger, IN. Born on June 3, 1946, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At age 2, they moved to Chapman, Nebraska; at age 7, they moved to Ralston, Nebraska, where he was raised. Lon was known for his warmth, kindness, and enduring dedication to his family and community. Lon was the cherished son of the late Carl and Cecelia (Frauen) Warneke. He was the loving brother to Carla Warneke of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Jerome (Jan) Warneke, also of Grand Island. Lon was a devoted husband to his surviving wife, Kathleen (Black) Warneke of South Bend, Indiana. He was a proud father to his daughter, Megan Warneke, and son, Paul Warneke, both of South Bend. His family will remember him as a pillar of strength, a beacon of wisdom, and a source of unconditional love. Lon was a versatile athlete, playing many sports throughout high school. He played basketball, baseball, football, softball, and ran track and hurdles. One of his most cherished sports achievements was being a part of playing in his high school State Championship winning basketball team in 1964. Lon received his associate degree in information technology, a field in which he would excel and make significant contributions. He was a dedicated professional who worked in IT Management at Home Federal Savings and Loan, later named Home Federal Bank, for 23 years and at First Source Bank for 8 years. His colleagues respected him for his expertise, work ethic, and ability to inspire others. Before embarking on his successful career in IT, Lon served his country honorably in the United States Navy. His service was marked by courage, commitment, and a deep love for his country. His time in the Navy shaped him into the disciplined, resilient, and principled man he was known to be. Lon also greatly enjoyed playing racquetball and golf. One of his favorite activities with his son, Paul, was being a coach and participating in Special Olympics bicycling during our time living in San Diego, California. Lon enjoyed attending baseball games with his children, and watching Paul light up when the fireworks began. Lon enjoyed dining out with his family. His wife Kathie and he would love tasting new restaurants, but also making many close friends at some of their regular favorite places to eat. Lon's passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. But his spirit lives on in the lives of those he touched and the love he shared. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Lon P. Warneke's life was a testament to the power of love, dedication, and service. As we bid him farewell, we celebrate a life well-lived and honor a man well-loved. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the values he held dear: family, service, integrity, and love. Lon was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, older brother Jerry and an infant brother. Funeral services for Lon will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 12, 2023, in the All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 S. Locust Street, Grand Island, NE 68801. Military honors and graveside services will follow in Westlawn Cemetery, 3826 W. Stolley Park Road,Grand Island, Nebraska.
