Marcus Scott Roper

Marcus Scott Roper, 70, passed away Sunday, July 12, in Grand Island after a lengthy illness. Celebration of life services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m., preceded by a noon luncheon and 1 p.m. visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Marcus was born in 1955 in Evanston, Illinois, to Delvin and Carolyn (Goodrich) Roper of Grand Island. After three years in Leaf River, Illinois, they moved to Nebraska, where Marcus began school in Edgar; and attended Brownell Elementary and Robin Mickel Junior High in Lincoln; Valley View Junior High and Westside High in Omaha, graduating in 1974; and Nebraska Wesleyan University. Marcus spent a year as an International Christian Youth Exchange student in Itzehoe, Germany, and later worked in a restaurant in Paris for 18 months. Fluent in German and French, Marcus was an international phone operator for Telenational Communications, Westin Hotels, the Social Security Administration and others. Cherishing Marcus’ memory are his loving parents; brother, Tim Roper (Medway, Mass.); sister, Joyce Roper (Cleveland Heights, Ohio); brother-in-law, Chris Ball; daughter, Danielle Roper (Omaha); son, Ryan Melton (Dallas); daughter-in-law, Laura Melton; nephew, Graham and niece, Sydney Ball; nephew Paxton and niece Tika Roper; grandsons Nigel and Lincoln Melton; and former significant others Francine Bauer, Toni Melton, Dawn Michel and Janet Rozum. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gretchen. Marcus was a man who wanted to become better, acknowledged his faults, proactively fought to overcome them, and died 23 years sober, a proud AA member. A devoted Cornhuskers football fan, he appreciated a good triple option or fullback dive. He could identify a song after a few notes and knew all the lyrics. He volunteered countless hours to help others who were suffering and was always there when needed. Marcus lived mostly in Omaha but moved to Grand Island in 2024 to help support his parents. Active with Trinity United Methodist Church, he sang in the choir and helped the Loaves and Fishes mission, which has fed thousands of Grand Islanders. He could skunk you in Cribbage and dunk you in Dominoes.
