Stephen "Steve" Bennett

Stephen “Steve” LeRoy Bennett, age 77, of Alda passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. There will be a memorial service and celebration of Steve’s life held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 1st, at All Faiths Funeral Home with Daniel Naranjo officiating. Steve’s ashes will be entombed at Grand Island City Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the Grand Island Honor Guard. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home from 12:30 until the time of the service. Steve was born August 6, 1946, in Grand Island, the son of Rufus “Johnny” and Katherine (Brown) Bennett. He grew up in Grand Island and enlisted in the United States Army on March 6, 1964, at age 18 and was honorably discharged March 9, 1968. He remained with the National Guard for another 12 years. On April 14, 1973, Steve married Carol Condy. He made his career as a diesel mechanic and retired as service manager at Bosselman’s. A ‘jack of all trades and master of some’, Steve was an inventor of sorts, and could patch together whatever it was that needed repaired. He enjoyed art and was very artistic. His stint in the army prepared him to be the best cook. His family will not forget his banana cake, mac & cheese, and German potato salad. He also enjoyed western movies, watching NCIS, visiting with friends, and was a history buff. Above all, Steve was always there for his family. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly. Those who cherish Steve’s memory include his wife, Carol; children, Bruce (Gabrielle) Bennett of Australia, Stephen Bennett II of Alda, Michelle (William) Anderson of Alda and Sonja Brockman of Grand Island. He is also survived by seven beloved grandchildren, Matt (Jessica) Bennett and their daughter, Baileigh, Nicola Bennett (Max Walker), Tyler (Whitney) Brockman and their daughter, Eliora, Cassandra Brockman and her daughter, Breana, Anthony Snider (AJ Gerdes), Zachariah Brockman (Vanessa Valle), and Lindsay Powell; two sisters, Kaye Bayne and Diane Walton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cathy Powell; grandson, Mark Brockman; sisters, Jean Preisendorf and Holly Pfeifer; nephew, Richard Aldana; brothers-in-law, Gary Vogt, Darryl Bayne, Walt Stenske, Calvin Lytle, and Randall “Old Goat” Condy and Randall’s son Daniel Condy; and stepfather, Roy Riggle.
