Calvin L Spellman

Calvin L. Spellman, 79 of Phillips passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at CHI- Health St. Francis. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home, visitation an hour prior. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Private family burial will take place in Phillips Cemetery at a later date. Calvin was born on June 11, 1937 at Wood River, eldest son of Herman and Mildred (Oswald) Spellman. Having grown up in several Nebraskan towns, Calvin graduated from Kearney High School in 1955. Following high school he was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, traveling to many nearby states. Then he was on the construction crew to build Interstate 80. On October 16, 1965 he was married to Shirley Hansen. The couple was blessed with four children, Ramona, Ronald, Corey and Darrell. Following their marriage, Calvin was employed as a guard at the State Penitentiary at Lincoln until moving to Grand Island where he was employed by Case New Holland until retiring in 1992. Having too much time on his hands, Calvin worked for the City of Phillips following his retirement. As a man of many adventures Calvin had several hobbies. He was like the energizer bunny and was always on the go. A favorite hobby was woodworking; Calvin made numerous cedar chests for friends and family. He was well known by his family as a wonderful cook and canned the produce from his garden. Once learning that his wife Shirley wasn’t much of a gardener but loved flowers, he learned how to grow the flowers for her, and always had a beautiful garden and yard. Calvin loved the outdoors, whether it would be working in his yard or spending time at his favorite place, down by the river. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid gun enthusiast. In his spare time he liked to read a good western. He adored his animals and loved to spend time with his family. His favorite holiday was the 4th of July or the 3rd of July as it was always celebrated. He was survived by his children, Ramona (Ralph) Lucas of Grand Island, Ronald D. Spellman of Grand Island, Corey (Tammy) Spellman of Aurora, and Darrell Spellman of Phillips, brother, Douglas Spellman of Elmwood; grandchildren, Shane (Nicole) Lucas, TadRalph Lucas, Cheyenne Lucas, Matthew Lucas, Codey Spellman, Michael Spellman, and Madalyn Spellman; step-sister, Linda Popert of Grand Island; great- grandchildren, Calvin and Theodore Lucas; along with numerous extended family and friends. Calvin was preceded in death by his father, wife, brother, Larry Spellman, sisters, Twyla Stevens, infant sister, special four legged friend, Maggie. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.
