Darla Jean “DJ” Meints, 78, of Grand Island died Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at CHI Health Saint Francis. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 2nd, at Peace Lutheran Church with Reverend Michael Reiners officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the church. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Darla was born September 14, 1937 at Malvern, Iowa to Alfred and Erville (Nelson) Baucom. Darla grew up in the Malvern and Randolph, Iowa area. She attended Strahan High School in Iowa, graduating in 1955. As a child, she was involved in 4-H, showing pigs and her horse. She attended nursing school and was employed at Hand Community Hospital in Shenandoah, IA. Darla married Kenneth E. Meints on December 23, 1956 in Shenandoah. The couple lived in Randolph, IA, and Pender, Creighton, Plainview, Ord and Shelton, NE. While raising their family in Shelton, Darla sold Avon and Tupperware. She then worked for Symphony Sales/ Tupperware Warehouse and later at Walmart. Her enjoyments included cooking and baking, especially her ice cream dessert requested by the family, and playing cards with her family. She was a member of several bowling leagues and was a Husker fan. Above all she loved being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Melanie Meints of Scottsbluff, Kandi and Ashton Lee Smith of Kearney, Kristine and Robert Michalski of Alda and Kurt and Kaye Meints of Shelton; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Shirley Baucom of Council Bluffs, IA; and brother-in-law, Paul Meints of McCook. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Adam Meints (Audra Aguilar), Keith (Cody) Meints, Kylee (Nick) Rhamy, Heather Szafrajda, Ashley Smith (Jason Manning), Kelsie Meints, Wayne Smith and Bobby Michalski; seven great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Ryker, and Ava Meints, Jacob, Conner and Lucas Rhamy and Addison Manning; nieces and nephews; many friends and her beloved dog, Gus. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother, Garry Baucom; grandson, Nathan; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Edith and George Scott and sister-in-law, Wilma Meints. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.
