Darrel Brannagan

Darrel Brannagan, 81, of Grand Island passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at his home. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. with the Christian Wake service at 7 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Fr. Don Burhman will officiate. Burial will follow at Grand Island City Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Grand Island Veteran’s Honor Guard and U.S. Army Honor Guard. Darrel is survived by his wife, LaVila of Grand Island; son, Russell (Megan) Brannagan of Firth, NE; daughters, Rhonda Brannagan of Grand Island and Rita (James) Kucera of Lincoln; brother, Larry (Rose Mary) Brannagan of Grand Island; sister-in-law, Joan Brannagan of Hastings; grandchildren, Madisen Kucera, Thaddeus Kucera, Caleb Brannagan, Luke ”J.Q.” Brannagan, Asher Brannagan and Mary Ellen “Ellie” Brannagan; numerous sister and brother–in-laws, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Darrel was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wayne Brannagan; sister, Patricia Paustian; infant brother Francis; infant son Roger, in-laws, Donald and Myrna Hammer and Harvey and Evelyn (Martin) George; brother-in-law, Gary Wert. Darrel was born at home on January 30, 1936 in Adams County, Nebraska, son of Arvene and Theresa (Phillips) Brannagan. After attending country school in Adams County. Darrel later moved to rural Trumbull and Doniphan farms where he continued his education, graduating with the Doniphan class of 1953. Following high school, Darrel enlisted in the U.S. Army serving from October 1958 until receiving his honorable discharge in October 1960. On June 12th, 1965 he married his love LaVila K. Hammer at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Grand Island, Nebraska. This union was blessed with four children. Darrel learned his dedicated work ethic from a young age, working side by side with his family on the farm where he grew up. After his service in the Army, Darrel was employed by the Weyerhauser Co. in Hastings. Later, Darrel was employed as a Supply Clerk for Werner Construction Co. in Hastings NE where he worked for over 30 years. Darrel was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Doniphan until moving to Grand Island, where he and LaVila were members of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Darrel was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Darrel loved the outdoors and was blessed to be able to work outdoors. He took pride in his yard and enjoyed his homegrown tomatoes. Darrel shared his work ethic and values with his children and was a very loving and doting grandfather. As a man of his generation he showed his love by hard work and providing for his family. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St. Leo’s Catholic Church.
