George A Newcomb

George A. Newcomb Jr., 75, of Grand Island passed away unexpectantly on July 26, 2024. Memorial services in his honor will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at All Faiths Funeral Home. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Air Force and Veteran’s Honor Guard. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Private family burial will take place at a later date at Cambridge Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. George was born January 1, 1949 in Lexington, NE, only son of George and Roberta (Taylor) Newcomb. George grew up in Curtis where he attended Medicine Valley Schools until his junior year when his family relocated to Aurora where he graduated from Aurora High School. Before continuing his education, George enlisted in the United States Air Force on March 12, 1969. He was stationed in Turkey and Japan and was received his honorable discharge on January 31, 1973. In 1976, George graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with his degree in elementary education and special education. He earned his master’s degree in school administration. On December 28, 1974, George was married to Karen Olsen, mother of Amber and Kim, for 19 years. He was greatly loved by her family George was a dedicated grade school teacher, he was the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math teacher at 1-R Grade School for 29 years. During that time, he also was the girls’ volleyball and basketball coach, and before his retirement, the principal. George was a member of the VFW, and enjoyed fishing and shooting ranges. He attended all of his daughter’s events and more recently his grandchildren’s’ events. George loved being “Papa”. He was ready for any activity and spent hours at the skate park or trampoline park with the grandkids. George never let his age slow him down and loved being a part of his grandkid’s day. He was always ready to help anyone who needed a hand. He is survived by his daughters, Amber (fiancé, Mike Dowty) Newcomb-Gregg of Central City, Kimberly (Ricky) Newcomb-Johnson of Grand Island; grandchildren, Bryce Johnson, Lucy Johnson, Maggy Johnson and Aiden Newcomb; sisters, Linda (Jim) Naeve of Lincoln, Patricia (Ivan) Gaeten of St. Augustine, FL, and Debra Walker of Lincoln; mother of his children, Karen Newcomb; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. George was preceded in death by his parents; sister Glenda Fantoni and brother-in-law, Bob Walker.
