Gregory A. Enck, 53 of Grand Island died Monday, February 9, 2015 at CHI-Health St. Francis following a courageous battle with cancer. Celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the Third City Christian Church. Pastor Josh Sikes will officiate. Family will be greeting friends an hour before services. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Greg was born December 25, 1961 at Grand Island the son of James and Ursula (Tibbs) Enck. He is preceded in death by his mother and infant brother, Scott. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Lori; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Heather Enck of Grand Island and daughter, Jessica Enck of Grand Island; grandchildren, Tatum, Kolton, Ryker, Maddox and Gabby; his father, Jim Enck of Grand Island; sisters, Peggy Carter of Grand Island and Jennifer (Josh) Olbricht of Grand Island; brothers, Jamie (Michelle) Enck of Grand Island, Mark (Brian Narber) Enck of Denver, Duane Enck of Hawaii and Mike (Dena) Enck of Grand Island; parents-in-law, Jim and Bev Anders of Grand Island; brother-in-law, Brian (Nina) Anders of Seattle, WA and many nieces, nephews and friends. Greg was raised in Grand Island attending St. Mary’s School, Central Catholic and graduating from Grand Island Senior High, class of 1980. He was united in marriage to Lori Anders at Grace Lutheran Church on February 12, 1983. As they lived in the area for many years, Grace Lutheran was also their local voting precinct for the couple and they would join arms as they walked into the church to vote. They made their home in Grand Island, raising their children, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying the community. Greg worked at the local Chevrolet Dealership in Grand Island for over 20 years. He later followed his life’s passion, made a major career change and began working with at-risk youth for Mid-Plains Center for Behavioral Healthcare Services. He ran the Emergency Youth Shelter in Grand Island, often reaching young people who would respond only to Greg. His passion and for never giving up on the youth he worked with carried him into a role as a Behavioral Para in the Skills Program for Grand Island Public Schools. In that most recent position, Greg continued to help the young people who were struggling in school. His love and commitment for these kids was an inspiration to those around him. Baseball was a huge part of Greg’s life. As a young man, he often played with older teams due to his athletic ability. His father coached most of Greg’s teams growing up. Greg took his love for the game into his adult years, serving on the Little League board, coaching, umpiring, and mentoring any kids who wanted to play. Any kids that couldn’t afford the fee, didn’t have the equipment, lacked some athleticism, or had any other obstacles to playing the game were recipients of Greg’s generosity. He bought them shoes, paid their fees, gave them gloves, and most importantly showed his belief in them. He taught them life skills along with baseball skills and let them try the positions on the team they were interested in. As a coach, Greg loved the kids and the game much more than the score. At times, he managed multiple teams at once. Most recently, Greg coached the GI Heat-12 and 13 year olds and a Northwest Little League team with his grandchildren. Together with his wife, Greg ultimately opened his home to help as many youth as they could. For many years, multiple foster children were recipients of Greg’s love and his commitment to helping them change their lives for the better. Every foster child that stayed in Greg and Lori’s home successfully graduated high school. Greg loved sports including the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the San Diego Chargers. He loved to watch great plays and players with integrity more than he cared for wins and losses. This interest in how the game was played was a constant theme in Greg’s life and he shared that passion with all around him. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in memory of Greg.
