James M. “Jim” Davis, 81, of Grand Island died on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Grand Island VA Community Living Center after a hard battle with brain cancer. To honor Jim’s wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church. Reverend Mike Reiners will officiate. Burial will follow in Central City Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. with military honors. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Jim was born in Fairbury on November 18, 1934 to Guy and Beulah (Kirby) Davis. He spent his childhood in Fairbury and graduated from high school in 1953. Jim spent three years in the Marine Corp. Following his discharge he began his college career including Fairbury Junior College, BA Degree from Kearney State, MA Degree from Colorado State and Specialist Degree from UNL. On June 21, 1959 Jim was united in marriage to Joan Boley. To this union, two sons were born, Brian and Kevin. His career in teaching included eight years in Trenton teaching high school Social Studies and English. He spent 26 years in Central City as elementary principal. Jim thoroughly enjoyed working with young students. He was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church, Grand Island Area Retired School Personnel, Peace Core Group and Mall Walkers Group. He enjoyed attending all of his grandsons’ sport and music events. He really enjoyed watching sports, especially his beloved Huskers and his lifelong Cleveland Indians. The day Jim went to his heavenly reward, both of his teams were victorious also. Other enjoyments included crossword puzzles, playing cards, lawn work, wood crafts, traveling and playing the slot machines. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Joan; sons, Brian (Marcia) of Fremont and Kevin of Dallas, TX; four grandchildren, Heath (Sarah), Brett (Chelsi), Kayleigh Davis and Kirsten (Ammon) Williams; two great-grandchildren, Kaige Davis and Adaline Williams; four step-grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ryan) Johnson, Erika (Jim) Chester, Emily (Dylan) Moss and Micah Schmidt; and a step-great-grandson, Mekhi Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Donna Mueller; four brothers, Kenney, Bob, Don and Mike; and infant grandson, Steven Davis. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.
