James "Jim" Lee Carter

James L. Carter, 73 of Grand Island died Saturday, June 28, 2014. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Jim was born January 17, 1941 in Grand Island the son of Wilbur and Enid (Palmer) Carter. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Shelley Carter of Grand Island; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Janet Carter and their two children, Adam and Makayla Carter all of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Bill Miracle of Georgia and their three children, Anthony (Jamie) Miracle, Joli Miracle and William Miracle; great-grandchildren, Peyton and Owen Miracle and brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Mary Carter of Utah and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and wives, Betty and Charlene and his four legged companion, Angus. He grew up and received his education at North Platte where he graduated from North Platte Senior High School. He attended McCook Jr. College where he received a Bachelor degree in History and Secondary Education. He then began working as a Deputy Sheriff where he worked for 3 years. In 1965 he changed his career path and joined the Grand Island Fire Department, during his tenure at the department he was promoted 3 times. In 1972 he was promoted to Lieutenant, 1974 promoted to Captain and in 1977 promoted to Fire Marshal where he finished up his career in 1992. Jim married Betty Jo Winner on December 27, 1960. They were married 19 years before her passing in 1979. The couple had two children, Anthony Carter and Christina Carter. Anthony married Janet and they have two children, Adam and Makayla. Christina married Bill Miracle and they have three children, Anthony, Joli and William. Jim married Charlene Piel on June 23, 1983. They were married for 29 years before her passing in 2013. Charlene had a son and daughter from a previous marriage. Jim married Shelley Pinkston on October 18, 2013. They were married for 8 months. Some of his enjoyments included antiquing and going to thrift stores, having breakfast with his old fireman friends on Mondays and Fridays; baking, cooking, canning, cook books and writing poetry. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.
