Jerry L Smith

Jerry L. Smith, 68, of Grand Island passed away at his home on Monday, March 11, 2024. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 on Friday, March 15, 2024 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 212 West 22nd Street, Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 Saturday, March 16, 2024 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow at Grand Island City Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Jerry was born on July 25, 1955 in Henderson, NE, son of Lyle and Nina (Thieszen) Smith. He was a social little child and made friends while living in Kansas and when the family settled in Grand Island in 1965. Jerry always looked forward to the summertime visits to his grandparent’s farm, he loved riding horses and getting to drive the tractors. Jerry graduated from Grand Island Senior High School with the class of 1973. He earned his Associates degree in Automotive Parts from Central Community College in Hastings. On April 26, 1986 he married Betty Sedlacek, they made their home in Grand Island and were blessed with son, Matt. For over thirty years Jerry was employed at Briggs Inc. in the sales department. Jerry shared a lifelong devotion to Husker football; he began listening to the game on the radio with his father to sharing game day with his son. Jerry was an avid reader and enjoyed western novels and movies especially with John Wayne. Jerry had an eye for fast or classic cars and was a member of several car clubs over the years. Currently he was the proud owner of a 2003 corvette, he fondly remembers his 1965 442 Oldsmobile that was also featured in a car magazine. Jerry loved his dog Korra and they went everywhere together. Jerry was the rock and support for his family and most important, he was an incredibly proud Grandpa. Jerry was survived by his wife, Betty of Grand Island; son, Matt Smith of Grand Island; grandson, Dominic Smith of Grand Island; sister, Diane England; nieces, Shauna (Shawn) Tordrup and Stacy (Tyler) Haman; numerous in-laws and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
