Mary Ethel Eckert

Mary Ethel Eckert, 80 of Grand Island died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at CHI- Health St. Francis. To honor Mary’s wishes cremation was chosen. Visitation and Services will be held at All Faiths Funeral Home. Visitation will be June 23rd 4 P.M. - 7 P.M., and Services will be held on Friday Jun 24th at 10 A.M with Dan Naranjo officiating. Burial will follow in the Nebraska Veterans Home Memorial Cemetery .Mary was born on August 8, 1935 in Erickson, NE, daughter of Elmer and Mildred (Marlow) Spiehs. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Warren (Wanda) Moritz of Hanover, MD, Susan (George) Mead of Wood River, Linda (Jim) Shannon of Fremont, CA; step-son, Alan (Deb) Eckert of Fremont, NE; brother Jim (Nancy) Spiehs; sister, Phyllis (Larry) Edwards of Longmont, CA; grandchildren, George (Kim) Mead of Colorado Springs, CO, David Mead (fiancé, Shona Fahland) of Tacoma, WA, Casey (Sage) Moritz of Sierra Vista, AZ, Carrie (Joe) Clancy of Tuscan, AZ, Jamie (Brian)Allen of Los Angeles, CA, Derrick Shannon of Fremont, CA; numerous extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Mildred Spiehs, husband Harold Eckert, infant brother Elmer Ray Spiehs, sister, Evelyn Clegg, granddaughter, Nicole Meyer, and faithful companion, Bo. Mary was raised and received her education in Grand Island, graduating with the class of 1953. She was married to Wesley Moritz; this union was blessed with three children. On July 19, 1974 she was united in marriage to Harold Eckert. Mary lived in Fremont, NE for over 18 years, while there she was employed as a nurse’s aide at Fremont Memorial Hospital. Upon returning to Grand Island she continued working as a nurse’s aide at St. Francis and then worked for many years at Skagway as a check stand Supervisor at Skagway in Grand Island. Mary felt it was important to stay in touch with friends and family who were far away; she always took the time for a phone call. She was a gifted pianist and loved to play for others. Mary treasured the time spent with her kids and grandkids, and enjoyed traveling to visit her family, shopping, playing cards with friends, and was a member of many pitch card clubs. She loved animals, especially dogs. Mary treasured the time spent with her kids and grandkids. Memorials are suggested to the Central Nebraska Humane Society.
