Opal Eggers-Nester

Opal Eggers-Nester was born on September 29, 1935, in Lexington, Nebraska, to Martin and Velma (Mundt) Keeler. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and friends after a long, full, and well-lived life. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 23rd at 11am at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Visitation will begin at 10am. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. As a teenager, Opal moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, where she worked as a typesetter in the print shop operated by Otto and Edith Schmale. Her work required setting type upside down and reading and spelling words backwards, a specialized skill that she took great pride in mastering. On June 10, 1956, Opal married Harlan Eggers. Together they farmed south of Cairo, Nebraska, where they built a life centered on hard work, family, and community. They shared a love of square dancing and traveled throughout the United States attending dances. They also enjoyed traveling together and exploring many destinations throughout Europe. Following Harlan's passing, Opal married William "Terry" Nester in 1995. Together they enjoyed traveling, taking cruises, visiting casinos, and making many happy memories until Terry's passing in 2007. Opal treasured friendships and was actively involved in her community. She was a member of the Platt Duetsche, the Saddle Club, the American Legion, and several card clubs. Opal spent her final years at Tiffany Square, where she remained comfortable, active, and well cared for. The staff became much more than caregivers—they became dear friends. Her family is deeply grateful for the compassion and kindness shown to her. A special thank-you is extended to Jane Thorngren, Dan Yenny, Peggy Poehler, and the many devoted friends and family members who faithfully visited and enriched her days. Opal will be remembered for her strong work ethic, adventurous spirit, love of dancing and travel, and the kindness she extended to family and friends throughout her life. She found joy in simple pleasures, treasured time spent with those she loved, and leaves behind a legacy of warmth, resilience, and lasting friendships. Opal is survived by her stepson, William "Andy" Nester and his wife, Hallie, her grandchildren, Hazel, Olive, and Ruby, whom she loved and shared many cherished memories with; her devoted brothers, Wilbur (Debby) Keeler, David (Ann) Keeler, Victor Keeler; and her brother-in-law, Delmar Eggers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Velma Keeler; her husbands, Harlan Eggers and William "Terry" Nester; her brothers, Richard Keeler and Larry Keeler; her sisters, Ruby (Eugene) Yenny and Linda (James) Whitaker; and her sister-in-law, Kathy (Victor) Keeler.
