Ronald E. Archer

Ronald E. “Ron” Archer, 73, of Grand Island died Wednesday, May 06, 2015 at his home, with his family at his side. Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Pastor Jay Towell will officiate. To honor Ron’s wishes, cremation will take place and burial of ashes will be at a later date in Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time at the funeral home. Ron was born July 22, 1941 at home in rural Litchfield, Nebraska, to Glenn and Lourene (Bearnth) Archer. Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Kimberly (William) Hicken of Grand Island, Christine Holley of Danville, VA, Janet Archer of Chatham, VA (wife of the late Ron Archer), Katherine Johnson of Gretna, VA, Jim (Connie) Archer of Martinsburge, West Virginia, Ronda Osgood of Grand Island and Matt Archer (Heather Kraft) of Grand Island; brother, Larry (Diane) Archer of Grand Island; sisters, Kathryn Hansen and Virginia (Jack) Zlomke, both of Grand Island; sisters-in-law, Agnes Harris and Laura Jackson; brother-in-law, Glen Bowers; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ronald Archer; brothers, Kenneth, Jack, Dick, Gary, Donnell and James; and sisters, Betty Evans and Peggy Bowers. Ron grew up in Litchfield, Aurora and Grand Island, attended GISH and later received his GED. He was married to Marilyn Davenport on November 12, 1958 and to Charlotte Schulte on July 21, 1970. Ron began employment at the age of nine, carrying scale tickets for horse and livestock sales for Bradstreet and Clemens Co. Horse and Mule Auction. By age 14 he was working with a survey crew running a D7 CAT and a Dirt Scraper. He continued in construction until he began working for Wright Tree Service out of Des Moines, Iowa. At 18, he had his own crew that traveled all over the Midwestern states. Ron then was employed by National Tree Expert Company, Inc. out of Owatanna, MN doing right of way clearing for incoming power lines. Ron moved back to Grand Island and was employed by Mercer Tree Trimming, as well as, Sheffield Tree Service. He then worked for the City of Grand Island Electric Department as a tree foreman for the line crew. Ron was employed by Hall County Maintenance Building and Grounds for several years. Until his health forced him to retire, he was employed by Grand Island Public Schools as a custodial night foreman for Walnut Middle School. Ron was a previous member of the Platt Duetsche and Eagles. He loved the outdoors and his enjoyments included hunting and fishing. He had a major ‘green thumb’ and loved taking care of his yard and gardening. Ron’s family meant everything to him, and they will remember his wonderful stories over a cup of coffee. As the old saying goes…Once an Archer, Always an Archer! A special thanks is extended to Dr. Isaac Berg, Dr. Salam Salman, MD., CHI Health Saint Francis and AseraCare staff, as well as, his friends of more than 60 years, Rich and Connie Janulewicz of Platte City, MO and Elaine Mrkvicka of Grand Island. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the family. It was also Ron’s request to have those attending the funeral come in casual dress.
