Russell "Russ" L. Harvey

Russell L. “Russ” Harvey Sr., 77 of Grand Island died on Monday, June 20, 2016 at CHI-Health St. Francis. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church with the vigil service held at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church. Fr. Michael McDermott will officiate. Burial will follow at Grand Island City Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by the Grand Island United Veterans Honor Guard and U. S. Navy. Russ was born on November 7, 1938, son of Henry and Alta (Klein) Harvey, in St. Paul, NE. Russ attended St. Paul High School, until enlisting in the United States Navy on November 7, 1955. After his honorable discharge in 1959 he reenlisted from 1961 to 1971. He served two tours in Vietnam and on numerous ships. Russ loved to attend the ship reunions for many years. On December 30, 1966 Russ married Janet Topel Brown. Their union was blessed with nine children, Gayle, Kevin, Keith, Joyce, Jacqueline, Janelle, Matthew, Russell Jr., and David. Following his service in the Navy, Russ was employed by the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island, as a civil engineer. Until his retirement in 1997 he was employed by the Federal Government Department of the Air Force in Hastings. Russ was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, DAV, VFW and the American Legion. Following retirement, Russ and Janet enjoyed traveling and attending many family reunions. Russ spent many hours in his workshop, where he’d put his meticulous organizing skills to good use. Most of all Russ loved to hang out with his family. He is survived by his wife, Janet of Grand Island; children, Gayle (Greg) Miller of Lincoln, Kevin (Kathy) Harvey of Lakewood, CO, Keith (Jolene) Harvey of Grand Island, Joyce (Donald) Kracl of Ashland, Jacqueline Harvey (Mike McClelland) of Naperville, IL, Janelle Harvey (David Hoisington) of Oconomowoc, WI, Matthew (Lisa) Harvey of Bennington, Russell Jr. (Shelly) Harvey of Grand Island, David (Brenda) Harvey of Castle Rock, CO; brother, Don Harvey of Grand Island; sisters, Vivian Salak of Grand Island and Donna Dobish of St. Paul; sister-in-laws, Elaine Harvey and Jeannette Harvey both of St. Paul; 34 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Daryl and Bill, in- laws, Marcia Harvey, Dick Dobish, Fred Salak and Rose Harvey. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Resurrection Catholic Church or Hall County Vietnam Hero Flight.
